i do have some! below the cut for those who aren't into such things

honestly it's wild to me how much the fandom has grown since i joined! when i first got into them, there were only 2 fics on ao3 and now there are almost 30? i love the boom in creativity 🥹🥹 anyway here are a few of my favorites:

you look good in my shirt by agender_adrastea - a quintessential fic in the fandom. it takes the very real event of joe wearing ja'marr's jersey and delves into a good backstory of how they could have gotten to the point, starting in college.

Not Your Average Joe and A Tiger of a Different Stripe by DLS - these two are super fun because they explore the idea of ja'marr not going to LSU in the first place, and only becoming teammates with joe after being drafted to the bengals. very much a "i'd love you in any universe" type of idea.

run pass option by espn - this is a short, sexy one shot based on some fanart that came out last summer and deals with the calf injury (but, again, in a sexy way 🙂)

so scarlet it was maroon by tulowitzki - a slightly angsty, sweet little piece based on the aftermath of the 2022 afc championship loss. (ironically titled after a taylor swift lyric way before she somehow became the face of the nfl this season lmao)

that's just a few, but all the fics in the fandom definitely have something to offer! and i really hope we continue to grow because god! there's just so much potential here!

Now is the time to formally tell all of you about THE NFL RPF that did exactly what OP said.

To start, I have mentioned this fic before over on my NFL RPF rec list!! <3 <3 <3

Anyway:

This story is a Tom Brady/Rob Gronkowski one shot that only has just under 3k words, but every single word counts and matters so so much.

The way the descriptions are make me feel things plus the time/energy/effort that the author put into it is very clear throughout the entire story.

Written in 2012, this was one of the first NFL RPF's that I had ever read. The fact that Tom/Rob are a bit of a rare pair within the world of NFL RPF did not turn me off, especially after I had seen everything about them leading up to the 2021 Super Bowl (the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs the Kanas City Chiefs at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay).

Anyway, this story perfectly captures their dynamics and make so much sense based on the way that they are together when in public.

Told from Tom's point of view, the story delves into why Tom is having the thoughts that he is about his relationship with Rob.

It also greatly highlights Rob's voice and shows over simply telling the reader exactly how and why Rob feels what he does for Tom.

There's also so many absolutely iconic one-liners within this piece!! My favorites are "lust like that was intoxicating" and "his no-nonsense answer was deeply, dangerously seductive". (And there's also a fantastic little section regarding Tom's thoughts on giving head...!! <3)

Basically, though the smut in this fic is hot & perfect & just so entirely them, the romance and deep feeling of it all is there too.

This fic always leaves me a little speechless with it's simple yet complex details.

I also always feel so inspired after I re-read it and am proud that this is what it's out there to represent the severely underrepresented ship that is Tom/Rob.

This fic showed me how to be descriptive but also simple. It taught me how to get inside a character's head and sus out all of their motives and why they are the way that they are.

It also gave me a different meaning on the topic of want and the deeper indications what that can all mean.

In conclusion, this story will forever and for always be important to me. If you wanna see my full review of the fic, go to the comment section on the story and you will see more!!!

Men's Hockey RPF FIC REC

There was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe

Men’s hockey RPF (very minor Sidney Crosby/ Evgeni Malkin), T, 77k (223k in total in series), NAWA

This is the fanfic I describe to non-fanfic readers when I want to explain the vast diversity in fanfiction, because everyone expects a 5k drarry pwp, but I don’t think anyone saw this fic coming.

With the premise of ‘what if NFL hockey players formed an Underground Railroad for Russian children endangered because their families were imprisoned for activism/ being queer?’ Shoshanah-ben-hohim waves an engrossing tale about courage, putting the lives of others before yourself, and what it means to love your country while hate what your country’s leadership is doing.

I don’t think you really need any NHL knowledge to read this; I certainly didn’t know who many of the RPF characters were. And there’s very little actual hockey game play in the piece.

I’ve often heard it said that some of the best fanfiction out there is in Men’s Hockey RPF, and while there are extraordinary fics in every ship I’ve dove into, the fandom certainly does include a lot of gems like this one.

anything by playclock, for starters. i dont even care about rogers/mahomes (i dont like either team?) but oh my god. yo. playclock my beloved your brain is so big when u write these guys like u dooooo. specifically their "love is not designed for the cynical" series because i am nothing if not an absolute fucking sucker for a good time loop fic

also, anything by kdsburneraccount!!!! their writing is v 🥰🥰 i still havent gotten around to reading their latest fics bc f1 has eaten so much of my brain worms lol BUT their writing is so so sooo enjoyable and definitely part of the small collection of actually good nfl rpf out there.

there really isnt a whole lot out there thats worth reccing tbh :/ lots of white bread p*triots fics. i would like to offer you my own work too, if i can rec myself: the moon's got a grip on the sea was my magnum opus for soooo long. i broke my own heart writing it and then odell actually got traded from the giants so i had to live w/the fact that i manifested it lol. also, i have an enormous eli manning/daniel jones hanahaki au on the back burner (its literally 40k+ and not even close to done) which i'll prob rec too when it's eventually finished because im a narcissist about my own work jsbdjdndmd

Some of these jumped into my head right away - the fic for de-aged gave me this idea in the first place; I don't generally like that trope but thought that fic was amazing. Others don't exactly match their trope, but were something that I liked that sort of fit.

two quick recs: this past weekend i enjoyed reading becoming (his dark materials, gen, 10k) which is a lovely meditation on iorek byrnison’s early life and was written for me (for me!!) and forward progress (nfl rpf, mahomes/rogers 16k) which is an excellently constructed time loop fic that i enjoyed despite coming in with complete ignorance of, and no investment in, the leads.
